Professor Godfried Augenbroe
|
Godfried Augenbroe has a 30+ year track record of research into the modeling and simulation of technical building systems and assessment of their performance. He is internationally recognized in promoting professional use of building simulation, e.g. through the co-founding of the Dutch national building physics society and international building simulation association (IBPSA) in which he has also served as board member.
Augenbroe has been advisor of 20+ finished PhD theses in Europe and the USA. He teaches graduate courses and conducts research in the fields of building performance concepts, building simulation, indoor air quality, intelligent building systems, acoustics, system monitoring and diagnostics. Since the early nineties, Augenbroe has coordinated four major EU funded consortia of academic and industrial partners, in the fields of design tool interoperability, energy performance simulation, outsourcing and project planning.
Augenbroe is associate editor of two scientific journals and on the scientific board of five other international journals. He has published over 120 refereed papers and published a book dealing with advanced topic in building performance assessment.
Augenbroe has a long standing membership of CIB working groups on building technology and building process and is the author of the CIB-W82 USA national report on sustainability (1999). He has held appointed visiting professorships at University of Loughborough (2000-current), Newcastle University (2000-2003), TU Delft (2002-2005), and Hong Kong Polytechnic (2006). He served as member on the accreditation board of architecture colleges in the Netherlands, and serves on national research program assessment panels in the UK and Finland.
Funding:
Augenbroe has obtained major research funding exceeding $20M from the European Commission, NSF, DOE, GSA, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, SAP, TC Chan Center, American Council of Engineering Companies, Reed/Elsevier, Military Health Services, and others.
His latest grant was the NSF-EFRI-SEED grant in the amount of $2M for “Risk conscious design and retrofit of buildings for low energy” (2010-2014).
Other achievements:
Augenbroe has pioneered work in finite element based building simulation (a commercial toolkit was marketed in Europe since 1984), Building Information Modeling (the first building information model, generated by the Augenbroe-led COMBINE consortium, appeared in 1995), and novel knowledge management software (Augenbroe incubated a start-up in Ga Tech incubator in 2000).
Current interests:
Augenbroe is currently involved in research projects dealing with large scale energy retrofit of the built environment, uncertainty and risk analysis of renewable technologies and next generation of building sustainability assessment
